In my recent effort to “market” myself to the world: making a new blog, a twitter, reading everyone else’s blog, basically; diving in to the social network in hopes of fulfilling my dream and Gods plan for my life! In the midst of all of my ME time, I think I may have forgotten to market myself to my boys. Naming one in particular…Cole! My sweet baby boy who is 9 (going on 20)
Many of the writings I’ve been blessed by in the past few days come from mothers of smaller children. Reading some of their stresses has sparked gratefulness in my heart, because my boys are getting older! I don’t think by any means that things are easier with them being older; I just think the stressors are different! One thing being; they don’t require quite as much of my undivided attention! During the school year, things are a bit different. It’s more of a structured chaos, but in the summer….it’s pure mayhem! Although I generally try to stay off of my computer during the day, I do have more flexibility than those with younger kiddos!
I had a nice stretch of days off (one of the luxuries of 12hr shifts) and it has been absolutely TOO HOT to do anything around here, so I decided to “work” from home! I declared the “day off” from most of my wife/mother duties ….and I sat at my laptop on the couch and worked….all day!!
Only I ran into glitches….LOTS of technical glitches! DNS settings, web domain mapping, hosting, rerouting, and on and on and on….and did I mention…Google is NOT my friend anymore!!! Therefore I got roped right back in the following morning, trying to fix it! (and I believe it worked!)
Back to the subject…..
After an evening away, I came home; spent some time with the family, then ventured myself into my office bed! (it WAS almost midnight at this point) Cole had already had himself planted there for a movie, so I was just going to work alongside of him, until:
Cole: “Mom, are you gonna do your work?”
Me: “Yes, honey, but you can still watch your movie”
Cole: “I was gonna see if you wanted to watch it with me”
Me: “while I can watch it with you while I work” (bad answer)
Cole: (as tears well up in those eyes)”Nevermind, I just wanted you to watch it with me”
Laptop off….I am now watching a movie with my boy, his heart is happy, and my heart is happy! Now, remember; it’s late, our home is completely unstructured at this point in life! So after about 30 minutes that sweet little voice says;
Cole: “Mom, you can do your work now if you want to”
Me: “no, sweetie, mommies watching the movie with you….why, you wanna ditch me?” (as I chuckle)
Cole: “No, I’m really tired”
Me: “well, you can lay your head down; I’ll still watch it with you”
5 minutes later…….
Best investment of any work day….a “time out” to market love to my baby boy!
Thank you Cole for the humbling reminder that even big boys need undivided attention from their moms!
