Death / Funerals / and Preachers…Doesn’t mean you’re goin’ to Heaven

If I die….I’m not getting into heaven just because the Funeral director says I’m there waiting for you….

I am going because I have followed God’s direction, and accepted His son as my Savior!

I suppose I didn’t realize I had this plank in my eye, until the subject just happened to roll across the radio today. All they were saying is how a Christian funeral is so much “better” than the funeral of a non Christian.

Really???…There is a difference?

Then I got to feelin’ this plank….

Like in my eye!

So I’m gonna confess it (pull it) and then share it (link up) over at Bohemian Bowmans!

It’s Plank Pullin’ time!  The one day a week that we strongly resolve to ignore the multitude of specks and sawdust around us and pull one bona fide plank from our own eye. Matthew 7:3-5, style.

Funerals irritate me. Whether labeled Christian or not.

They irritate me….

I truly, honestly cannot recall ever attending a funeral where the pastor/preacher/priest stood before the people and said:

“Let’s face it; your loved one is probably spending an eternity in the fiery pits of hell, because they didn’t accept Jesus”

Now, before you judge me….I am not heartless. I recognize that quite possibly; the above verbiage is a little harsh…especially during a fresh season of sorrow and grief.

But I also don’t think it is fair to stand up there and offer the salvation speech by luring people into believing that their loved one is standing at the gates of heaven, and if you listen to what he says, you’ll get to see them again one day.

Now, I believe  that’s an awesome plan, and an awesome speech…IF that person had indeed accepted Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior and really was standing at the gates of heaven.

Let’s be real folks…Gods word is what it’s all about…and it clearly states:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” John 3:16

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.  John 14:6

It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. Jesus is:

‘‘the stone you builders rejected,
which has become the cornerstone.’’

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. Acts 4:10-12

So, here’s the deal:  if our loved ones have not accepted Jesus Christ, I’m sorry but they aren’t going to heaven. And even if you do…you won’t be seeing them. It is a harsh reality, even for me; with MANY unsaved friends and family members. and I wish our leaders would stop giving people false hope.

Wanna fix it?

Are you living in a way, that others want what you’ve got?

  1. My pastor makes it a point to let people know when he does funerals what he will and will not say. He often will tell people that he isn’t sure if the deceased was saved or not but that he hopes so. And makes it a point at every service to point out that for the rest of us still here the only way to get to Heaven is through Jesus!

  2. How about when people speak about pets in heaven? Double Ugh!
My FIL, a baptist preacher, also does not speak about the deceased in heaven even if there was a testimony of salvation in our own church as he says, he does not truly know one’s heart and only the Lord knows. BUT, he does give a salvation message (not too hell fearing heavy though as there are some very sensitive hearts at a funeral) true to God’s word.
