A Thanksgiving reflection

Standard

Reflecting on the day that I am to be full of Thanksgiving:

In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
~1 Thessalonians 5:18

And I think I may have mixed my emotions slightly throughout the day. After having a really.really rough last couple weeks. My mother in her sweet efforts said to everyone that although I host the Holiday, she it would be nice of them all to prepare the meal, and clean the mess. Sounds dreamy right? Read on…..

We planned for a later gathering in an effort to accommodate everyone else’s family gatherings.

I awoke at my leisure. (actually was awaken by the 18yr old checking to see if I was alive)

We drove to some family that we hadn’t seen in some time, and visited over some coffee and donuts, pit stop on the way home to see grandma.
I got home, didn’t have to cook a thing…..but that just wouldn’t be right, so I made a couple pies. Ok, Sara Lee helped, but they were baked….good as home made…right?

Pumpkin and Sweet Potato

Then I whipped up some Challah bread. I love bake, so this was really no chore for me. It was my first time making Challah, and I think I just may have a new love.

Before long the family started to trickle in….

The Ham arrived….

Ham

The green bean casserole…

The Sausage

The Greens

The mashed potatoes

Don't judge...these bad boys are a.m.a.z.i.n.g!!! (and besides, they're technically real)

Shortly there after….
The Turkey arrived

The stuffing

The Texas sheet cake

Mmmmm....

And whatever else I forgot. (because, I’m tellin’ ya….there was A LOT)

We ate, and ate, and ate…..until we couldn’t stand to eat anymore (because that’s what you do…right?)

sleepy brother in law

And then…..everyone began to leave…..without their mess.

I wanted to grumble, and complain, and be angry that I was left with a mess of sorts from the holiday dinner….

But I didn’t.

I made a choice.

A choice to be Thankful.

“We would worry less if we praised more. Thanksgiving is the enemy of discontent and dissatisfaction.”          ~ Harry Ironside

Thankful to have been able to go about my day leisurely.

Thankful to have been able to host at our home, in our environment.

Thankful to share a day with parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, and children

Thankful for the sound of running and laughter from children throughout my home.

Thankful to not have had to cook all of the above.

And even Thankful that 1/3 of the dinner was prepared in disposable aluminum 😉

So I cleaned……
And cleaned……

And then I rested…..

And reflected for just a moment on all that I am Thankful for…

now, THAT'S how you eat a piece of pumpkin pie

Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire.
~ Hebrews 12:28-29

  1. What this loving and thankful sister forgot is that she had offers to help clean and she said “don’t worry about it,” also that I took 3 pans home with me…LOL =0) Now I was thankful for all of the above and the fact that I got to spend time alone with two of my nephews, and do a bit of Black Friday shopping!

  2. I’m a little late to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, but I wanted to stop by and say thanks for linking up to NOBH! It looks like a yummy good time and good for you to not complain about the cleanup and be thankful 🙂 Hope to see your link ups at NOBH again 🙂

    God bless!
